Time at Leisure: Lima

Today you enjoy a day at leisure!

Area Overview

Formerly a port town where conquistadors transported Incan gold back to Spain, Lima was founded in 1535 by Francisco Pizarro but its history goes much deeper. Mud brick pyramids called huacas still stand in the middle of the city dating back to the Lima Culture, a pre-Inca society that thrived on the Central Coast between 200 AD and 700 AD. A visit to Larco Museum will acquaint travelers with 5,000 years of pre-Columbian history before jetting off on a tour of Peru.

Other highlights in Lima include The University of San Marcos, one of the oldest universities in the New World, San Lorenzo and Palomino Islands, the Monastery of San Francisco, the magnificent Catedral de Lima, the Convent of Santo Domingo, and colonial homes such as Torre Tagle Palace and Osambel House.

The city has become a premiere gastronomical destination, mixing Spanish, Andean and Asian cuisine, and consistently takes a spot or two on rankings of the world’s top 10 restaurants. From humble dishes - the country boasts 4,000 types of potatoes - to sophisticated modern fare, foodies will not be disappointed dining out in Lima.

Sacred Valley

Area Overview

Just north of Cusco, in the fertile Andean highlands of the Urubamba Valley, lies a stretch of mythical pre-Columbian ruins, Incan villages, and tiny colonial towns surrounded by snowcapped peaks, shimmering lakes, and flowering meadows protected by sacred Apu mountain spirits. Ollantaytambo and Pisac are incredibly well-preserved and the most popular archeological sites.

Nearby are the salt pools and Incan mines of Maras, the peculiarly designed circular terraces of Moray, each with its own micro-climate, and more remote villages such as Chinchero, the center of weaving in Peru, believed to be the birthplace of the rainbow.

Adrenaline junkies can indulge in every imaginable adventure in the Sacred Valley, from paragliding over the Andes, white-water rafting, horse-back riding, biking or revving an ATV through meandering mountain trails, to experiencing one of the highest bungee-jump spots in South America or zip-lining down a 7,000 foot-long line. It’s a thrill-seeker playground.

Day 5

Time at Leisure: Cusco

Today you enjoy a day at leisure!

Area Overview

Originally designed in the shape of a puma, Cusco was once the site of Coricancha, the Incan temple of the sun and holy centerpiece of the empire. It was stripped of all the gold covering its walls and mostly destroyed by the Spanish, who built churches and palaces on top. Remnants of the temple and mysterious Inca city still remain along Cusco’s colonial period architecture.

As one of the oldest continually inhabited cities in South America, Cusco is surrounded by archaeological sites. Sacsayhuaman is the most impressive with its zigzag stone tiers and can be reached on foot from town. This Inca fortress and religious center offers a great view of Cusco and Plaza de Armas, where the immense 17th century Cusco Cathedral stands.

Back in town, walk up the ancient Inca street, Hathunrumiyoc, to see the famous 12-angled stone set into one of the best surviving Inca walls, then be rewarded with the cafes, restaurants, bars and specialty shops of the San Blas neighborhood, aka the artisan quarter. Another Cusco must-see is the San Pedro market, a maze of aisles jam-packed with food stands and vendors of every kind.

Along the way you will enjoy a gourmet lunch prepared with exquisite Andean ingredients and there will be music and dance shows on board.

Upon your arrival at Puno train station, our transportation and a representative will be waiting to transfer you to GHL Hotel Lago Titicaca.

Puno

Area Overview

As Peru’s folkloric capital, Puno keeps indigenous culture alive with a full calendar of festivals steeped in traditional music, 300 types of rural dances, and constant parades. Legend has it that life began in Puno when Manco Capac and Mama Ocllo emerged from Lake Titicaca and established the Inca dynasty.

The art of weaving and embroidery has been passed down through generations of the Uros people, who live on floating islands made of reeds in the middle of Lake Titicaca which, at 3,810 meters (12,500 ft), is the world’s highest navigable lake.

The small port town’s main draw is the floating islands but Calle Lima offers a pleasant strip of shops, restaurants, and bars. Located at the heart of the city is Plaza de Armas, where Puno Cathedral’s intricately carved stone facade and silver altar exemplifies 18th century Andean-baroque architecture. The pre-Incan burial site of Sillustrani is a 40 minute drive from Puno and is where huge round tombs called chullpas overlook Lake Umayo, whose serene waters are said to be enchanted.

Puno to Uros and Taquile Islands (Semi-private)

07:10 · Start Time

Activity overview

Today we will enjoy an extraordinary journey across the world's highest navigable lake, Lake Titicaca. We will sail to legendary places where time seems to have stood still. Our first stop will be the Uros floating islands. These are a peculiar grouping of around 40 small islands made totally of totora, a natural reed that grows around the lake. The cheerful inhabitants will invite us to get to know their traditional lifestyle and customs. We will continue our voyage across the placid waters of the lake until arriving to the picturesque Taquile Island, a peaceful place where old Quechua traditions live in perfect balance with modernity. We will discover a landscape distinct from the other islands thanks to the Incan terraces filled with local flowers and crops. The rich colors of clothing worn by the local inhabitants will amaze us as well their beautiful hand-made fabrics. Most importantly, we will enjoy the unbelievable hospitality of the islanders, known as Taquileños, who will make our visit to the island a memorable one. Iguazú Falls

Area Overview

Iguazú Falls, within the Iguazú National Park, is one of the New Seven Wonders of Nature. The Rio Iguazú rushes up to 82 meters (269 ft) over the edges of 275 separate waterfalls, forming a gargantuan frothy basin below. At 2,700 meters (8,860 ft) across, Iguazú is three times wider than Niagra Falls - it is a true behemoth of a waterfall. Iguazú Falls is shared by Argentina and Brazil: Brazil can claim 95% of the Iguazú River basin, but Argentina is home to 80% of the waterfalls. The actual border runs through “Devil’s Throat,” the largest water curtain of the entire park and one of the most famous viewpoints.

Once in the national park, walkways and a bus system take visitors to various viewing points along upper and lower trails to take in the breathtaking sights. While the Falls are the highlight, the subtropical ecosystem is home to many species of indigenous flora and fauna, including 250 species of butterflies.

Area Overview

Tropical forests, rolling hills, and mountains frame this vibrant, hedonistic, seaside city on the Atlantic coast of southeast Brazil. The brilliant white sand beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema stretch for miles along the palm-tree lined main avenue bustling with high-end shops, fine dining restaurants, and nightclubs. European and African influences are prevalent in the city’s historic and cultural attractions, cuisine, art, and its rhythmic music.

Rio is known for Sugarloaf Mountain, jutting straight out of the ocean at the mouth of Guanabara Bay, its hillside favelas, incredible surfing, bossa nova and samba, glitzy Carnaval celebrations, Maracana (the largest stadium in the world) and, of course, soccer. The most visited city in South America, its 2.5 million visitors a year and the Cariocas (locals) are always under the watchful eye of Christ the Redeemer, a huge art-deco statue of Jesus standing with arms outstretched above the city at the top of Corcovado Mountain.

Florianopolis

Area Overview

Known by locals as “Floripa” or “the magic island,” Florianopolis is the capital of the southern state of Santa Cristina and made up mostly of the 54km (33 mi) long Santa Catarina Island. The Pedro Ivo Campos Bridge connects the island to the mainland commercial district that comprises the city as a whole. It's famous for its beaches, including popular resort areas such as Praia dos Ingleses at the island's northern tip. Lagoa da Conceição, a saltwater lagoon, is great for windsurfing and boating.

Apart from its 60 beaches, Florianopolis is known for parades, food, culture, watersports, and marine adventures, as well as a vibrant nightlife.

Ponta Dos Ganchos Exclusive Resort

Anhatomirim · Breakfast Included

3 Nights

Property Overview

Located on a private peninsula in the city of Governador Celso Ramos, Ponta dos Ganchos Exclusive Resort is surrounded by a fishing village and is immersed in lush nature. A peninsula of cliffs that form coves where nature has acted capriciously, with an aura of romance provided by the most authentic tranquility and privacy.

With a privileged location, the resort is within a short flight distance of São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, and Buenos Aires. The green of the mountains seem to merge with the Emerald Coast water, north of Santa Catarina. Three small islands and a white sand bay make the scenery even more enchanting.

One of the main characteristics of Ponta dos Ganchos is its exclusivity. 25 bungalows are divided into seven categories, from 80 m² to 310 m². All of them are designed for up to two people and provide a stunning view of the Emerald Coast.

The resort also has gastronomy recognized for being classic cuisine combined with contemporary techniques and the search for the valorization of Brazilian regional cuisine.

Ponta dos Ganchos Spa by Sisley, a true oasis in the midst of nature, offers an official Sisley body and facial treatment menu, in three tents with a beautiful view of the Emerald Coast.
